Frequently Asked Questions - Chip Tuning Service
What We Do | Is It Safe | Warranty | Trial Period
1. What exactly do you do?
Our technicians make a connection to your vehicles ECU through the vehicles diagnostic port and read (take a copy) of the current engine control unit file, we then send this off to be custom modified for you vehicle. Our technician makes modifications to your original copy and our mobile tuner proceeds to write the file back to your vehicle, once complete you will then have the opportunity to drive your vehicle and feel the new experience yourself.
On some vehicles it is not possible to carry-out this function via the diagnostic port, in these cases the ECU is removed from your vehicle and we carry out the modification by bench mode on the ECU before reinstating the ECU back to your vehicle. The process of tuning your vehicle by bench mode is the only difference, the modifications will be exactly the same as it would be via your OBD port. Depending on the vehicle, the tuning normally takes about 1 hour to complete, as all cars are different this process can take considerably longer, we will advise you at time of taking any booking.
2. Where can you tune my vehicle?
We can carry out the whole process of tuning your vehicle via the diagnostic port at any location that suits you (subject to travel distance and fuel costs) all we require is parking access for our company vehicle
3. Why don't the manufacturers do it?
Manufacturers generally sell one vehicle that covers various markets, with different tax and emissions regulations; different climates with extremes of heat, cold, humidity; different fuel quantities; different operating altitudes, etc. A manufacturer has to take all of these factors into consideration and make substantial compromises in the vehicles operation.
Sales and marketing also have a big affect on the way an engine is mapped. If you look the in manufacturer brochure at the engine specs, the torque graph will rise, then flatten out on a straight line, and then drop off. This obviously isn't how an engine breathes, and it's the request of sales and marketing to produce this flat lining of the torque. Why? Well it's about having better torque figures than the competition and about local market taxation laws.
4. Is it safe for my vehicle?
Our Mobi Tuning re-mapping will both increase the power and enhance the smoothness of the engine, we will always work to provide your remap within safe tolerances, we will never go beyond this. With more power will most definitely result in smoother and fewer gear changes. Manufacturers construct their engines and set parameters within their preferred range for obvious reasons, one of those reasons which is understandable, is to avoid post sale returns due to unnecessary excessive strain on their engines during the normal average timescale of 3 year warranty period.
We understand that many individuals will seek to gain as much power as possible from their car, for instance those that use their car for rally purposes whether that be on/off road use. You will find that vehicles use for this purpose using standard car manufacturers hardware tend to fail often due to the difference in requirements in comparison to the normal road use car. We at Mobile ECU Tuning Scotland would never increase such parameters within our remap files anywhere near the limits which could effectively cause damage to your vehicle.
You will find from the many hundreds of tuners on the market currently they will show very similar output figures/gains as there is a trend which has over time been concluded that these figures are within which is accepted as safe limits. Alway be wary of any tuner who advise they can provide substantially higher figures of output in comparison to the majority as you may find that these figures will either be intentionally inflated to gain your business, or worse still, you will be provided with a remap that could potentially seriously damage your vehicle.
5. Do you offer a trial period?
We are very confident that your Mobile Tuning Remap will not only improve your driving experience, it will almost certainly provide you with some improvement on fuel economy. Please don't take our word for it, why not try the upgrade for 7 days and if you are not delighted with the results we will restore the original file and provide you with a full refund.
6. Does a remap affect the manufacturers warranty?
A car remap will, under specific circumstances, void your engine warranty (including the turbo or supercharger), it may also void your clutch and gearbox warranty too. If you have heard different elsewhere, then you have been lied to. Car manufacturer warranties clearly state that modifications to any components that are not approved by the OEM will void their warranty. A car remap not approved by your OEM falls under this. Before deciding on a remap please read full facts
7. Do you keep a copy of my original tuning file?
Yes we do.
We will keep a copy of your original tuning file on our secure server so that we car return you vehicle back to the original map specifications.
8. How does tuning/remap improve my vehicle?
Yes we do.
A full Mobi Tuning engine remap alters the fuel, boost and torque characteristics of the engine by controlling the fuel pressure, injected fuel quantity, maximum permissible visible smoke limit and boost pressure from the turbocharger.
A Mobi Tuning remap offers a fully controllable change to the engine characteristics, whilst still operating with full engine feedback control and within all the preset engine sensor limits.
9. Do i need to advise my insurer?
We strongly advise that you inform your insurance Company of not only your intentions to have your vehicle remapped, but of any changes or enhancements you plan to make to your vehicle, this will avoid any unnecessary issues in the future should you need to make a claim. Through experience and feedback from our customers we see that most insurance companies are quite tolerant to an ECU remap, but in saying that, they are also likely to impose an increase in premium.
10. I have seen other companies offering a 30 day warranty, do you offer this?
If the remap is done correctly the car will run spot on from the word go and will stay like this indefinitely! Why? because a remap doesn`t change, it isnt dynamic and therefore does`nt develop a fault over time. There would only be a reason to offer these 30 day warranty if they don`t have confidence in their work! The companies offering this would obviously want you, the customer, to return to them rather than taking the vehicle elsewhere to be diagnosed if an issue was present within the map itself, that way they can hide their corner cutting shoddy workmanship! We always go for a test drive before and after to ensure all is ok and to ensure our technicians are happy with the results as well as you are.
We do however offer a 7 Day no questions asked money back guarantee to allow for time to evaluate your map in all driving conditions.
